To become a teacher in the Northern Territory you must register with two bodies. Although you do not need to be registered by the Teacher Registration Board (TRB) to apply for a teaching opportunity, we strongly recommend that you gain registration with TRB to ensure your application is prioritised for consideration for employment. Prioritise your application now
While the TRB endeavours to process applications in a timely manner, in some instances registration may take 6-8 weeks.
You must be registered to take up a teaching position in the Northern Territory.
There are two ways to apply for a teaching position at a Northern Territory Government school.
Many base grade teacher positions and temporary positions are filled from a pool of available applicants instead of being specifically advertised.
To be considered for these positions you need to apply for a password and log in on this site and fill in all sections of the online application form.
Your application will stay current and available to principals for 1 month from the date you submit it or update it - unless DET has employed you or you have asked for your application to be withdrawn. After 1 month of account inactivity your application will be archived. Archived applications are restored automatically upon user login.
If you are offered employment you should fax, email or mail your documents to DET as soon as possible.
All promotional positions and positions that cannot be filled from general applications are published on the current opportunities page on this site and/or advertised through national newspapers.
If you are interested in applying for a specific position, you should contact the principal or manager to discuss the working environment and job requirements. If you can, visit the school or the school website.
Click on the vacancy position number to see a general summary. You will see the job description (Word document) and a link to the NT Government jobs website, where you can apply online.
If DET offers you employment, you should fax, email or mail these documents as soon as possible:
Please see the contacts section for fax, email and postal information.
Please note, you should not make any moves towards relocating to the Northern Territory until you have a formal offer of employment made by the DET Recruitment Unit. A principal in the Northern Territory does not make offers of employment to applicants. They will recommend an applicant to the Recruitment Unit, whose role is to make formal offers of employment.
