In the Northern Territory there are:

There are a total of 33 000 students and 45% of students attend non-urban schools.

About 41% of primary students are Indigenous and about 29% of secondary students are Indigenous.

Urban schools

Schools in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Alice Springs are considered urban schools. These schools include primary, secondary and special schools.

Remote schools

Most schools in remote areas are primary schools with smaller numbers of secondary schools than in urban areas.

Some remote schools are Community Education Centres, providing primary and junior secondary education. These schools enrol secondary-age students. Some provide Vocational Education and Training programs.

Homeland Learning Centres are also located in remote communities. These schools often have only one or two teachers and cater for Indigenous students from a range of age groups. Homeland Learning Centres also provide programs to primary and secondary school-aged students.
